The phenomenal success of Charlaine Harris has pulled along in her wake dozens of other writers mining the same field of action that this small-town (Magnolia, Arkansas) author has exploited so successfully. Picking up where previous writers have gone (Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, etc) Harris has fashioned vampires into something more like alternative human beings that exist within 'normal' society, yet maintain an observational distance.
