Byrd Park Fireworks Show July 4, 2009Photos were taken with an Olympus Stylus 850. The peculiar thing about a fireworks show is that it can become boring rather quickly. Once you've seen the run of colors and explosion types, seeing them again and again can get wearing, as if your mind says "Wait, I've already seen that one several times... what else do they have?" As interesting as all that blast of color, sound and light is(and it surely is) most of the fun is to get to see the parade of kinds of people that gather to see the program of explosions. It seems to cut across the whole strata of (American) humans, with only those who refuse to go to any sort of public event the only ones not making at least a token appearance amid all the sunshine, sweat, odors, flags and food smells.
I filled up many pages of a pocket sketchbook while surveying the teaming hordes, and shot many surreptitious photos of the most curious looking. Click to images below to see enlargements.
