There are still independent bookstores here and there in America, tucked into places where a humongous Barnes & Noble (or the weak sister of big box bookstores, Borders) doesn't fit. For example the Island Bookstore on Mackinac Island, Michigan, up in the Lake of Huron (sorta) near to the border with Canada. Sorry for the bad focus.
