Felix Vallotton

“The Trottoir Roulant” woodcut from “The World’s Fair” series 1901

Using a simplicity of style, Felix Vallotton presaged much of the open-and-closed line art styles of Europe, culminating in an effect upon later comic creators by encouraging the abandonment of crosshatching and other grey-tone techniques to create pure black and white images, sometimes filled by color, other times by basic black and white balances.
