Ice Cream Tuesday

Chocolate, Vanilla, whatevuh:

ice cream history

China is the probable origin place of ice cream as a combination of ice and milk. But it's recorded that Emperor Nero had combinations of fruit and ice made during his reign of some 70 years before Christ. The ancient Greeks consumed mixed confections of snow, ice and sweets in the form of honey or fruit which were made to be sold in the agora marketplaces.

The Carillon Bell Tower in Richmond

I have updated the page about the Carillon at Byrd Park, Richmond - - one of the largest musical instruments in the world.

This tower is a fascinating combination of architecture, memorial (the structure is dedicated to Richmond's WW1 dead) and music: 56 bells inside the tower are playable as an instrument.

Photographs:
Richmond Carillon Tower War Memorial
Located at Byrd Park is the World War I Memorial Carillon, a 56 bell carillon tower that is also itself a musical instrument. "Carillons" are large-scale bell arrangements in which are played typically from a baton keyboard where the player uses their fists and feet. Bronze bells make up the instrument, the number of bells determining the tonal possibilities for playing a piece of music. Carillons are in Europe, Russia, and the United States. The largest is in Naperville, Illinois, and the Carillon with the widest note range of 77 bells (each bell makes a single note) is in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Carillons date back to at least the 1500s, and the modern bell design date from advances made in metal smelting in the 1700s. More information and large photos here.
