SHORT NOTES
- I am working on a new web site about the American artist Albert Pinkham Ryder (Painting above Marine from 1890). I will note the address for the site on this blog when it's up.
- I am writing a review of the new Darwyn Cooke Spirit #1 comic book that's out from DC Comics. It is a much better introduction to The Spirit than the goofy Spirit/Batman comic from last month (not that I disliked that issue, it's just that it was too much a case of throwing everything from Batman and the Spirit's list of villains together and stirring. I was disappointed that Batmite wasn't included! Everytbody else seemed to be in it!) Nonetheless, this new Spirit comic is well done on all counts and Darwyn Cooke has produced something that is much less homage than might be expected. It has a goodly amount of satire in it, too, not something you get with much grace in a "superhero" comic book.

ALEX TOTH SPEAKS
Paul Pope's blog has a page which discusses not only Pope's relationship to Toth (which was apparently somewhat problematical); but also discusses Toth's teaching the physics of comic book making, and includes Toth's blistering letter to Steve Rude accusing him of "faking" a Johnny Quest story that Rude illustrated.
