The League of Evil Villains
And Cyril Connolly

I had read an article about the writer Cyril Connolly in the November 2008 New Criterion journal and promptly formulated a comic strip about the travails of things that interfere in getting one's artwork done. Connolly's dilemma was pushed to a somewhat ridiculous extreme; below from the Joseph Epstein article):

What Connolly did instead was write about his inability to write, or at least to do the kind of writing he himself have liked to have done. 'I review novels to make money,' he wrote in his journal, 'because it is easier for a sluggard to write an article a fortnight than a book a year, because the writer is soothed by the opiate of action, the crank by posing as a good journalist, and having an airhole. '

Epstein also quotes Connolly: '...the more books we read the clearer it becomes that the true function of a writer is to produce a masterpiece and no other task is of any consequence.

In my (unfinished) comic strip, a cartoonist of anxious mind lists the many things that interfere in finishing a comic strip, for example the League of Evil Villains. Connolly's plight seems mostly derived from pedestal worship of too many other good writers.
