Krazy Kat

George Herriman's strip ran from 1913 to 1944. Considered one of the best strips to ever run in the newspapers (and many haven't been shy about saying flat out it was the best strip to ever run, period) the simple story revolved around a repeating pattern of love and ridiculous violence: Krazy loves Ignatz, who returns the affection by slamming him with a brick in every episode. And Officer Pup tries to prevent it each time, with various levels of success.
